My Transcription of "The
Star-Spangled Banner"
|
I got the idea to do my own version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" for electric guitar a few weeks after September 11th. Jimmy Hendrix made this famous but, ironically enough, I've never heard his version! The real inspiration was a set a variations for violin in the style of Paganini by a composer whose name currently escapes me. While my version is by no means a set of variations (maybe I'll work on it this winter), it is a pretty fun piece on guitar. There's a good bit of chordal work as well as some gratuitous fast runs.
If you're a guitarist or want to see the score, you can get it here.
I performed this for the first time in Denver in early October in the outdoors - it was under 40 degrees that night and this was the first piece I played. I felt sufficiently warmed up, but, needless to say, I was a bit rigid. It still came out decent despite a couple of minor mistakes. The audience certainly enjoyed it. Take a listen here.
